I just finished the book Happy Vegan by Entrepreneur and Mogul, Russell Simmons. I must say it is definitely a good read , and really gives you insight into an alternative lifestyle that we should all  consider. Russell Simmons’ take on why we should consider going vegan is very precise, and detailed. He delves into why eating animal products is harmful for your body, your soul, and  the environment. What I like about this book is that it is short,  “to the point”, and provides plenty of facts and testimonials to back up its statements. For example it explains the protein myth that is associated with anyone that chooses to go vegan. Basically the protein myth is that If you decide to give up animal products , your body will suffer from protein deficiency which will weaken you. Happy Vegan states that first off by having a diet rich with animal products, you’re most likely eating 2-3 times the protein intake that your body should have. It also goes on to list the plethora of non-animal foods that are rich in protein.

In regards to health issues , Simmons explains how meat has been linked to many types of cancers and diseases. Furthermore , I think what really captivates the reader is when Simmons explains the total process of getting the animal from its natural state to your plate. The picture he paints is extremely vivid, and even if you’re not an animal lover you will cringe at the details regarding the treatment of  animals in farm factories. When you consider how these conditions the animals are put in effect their health, plus the amount of drugs they give to these animals , it provokes you to really wonder about the practice of consuming animal products, and if it’s really worth it.

While I’m not exactly a PETA member, I do believe maintenance of your body is important and that you are what you eat. I believe we must manage what we take in to our bodies from what we watch, what we listen to and what we eat. I’ve been a pescetarian for a few months, and my reasoning for continuing this diet is because I want to maintain my temple. Happy Vegan provides more than enough good reasons to cut out animal products as well as a guide on how to do it.

I know it may be taboo, especially in the black community but in all honesty, it can save your life. Don’t take my word for it, pick up this short read.
