Track of the day: Yasiin Bey-UMI says

Black on Both Sides; 1999

The track of the day is from Yasiin Bey formerly known as Mos Def. This is a notable record from Yasiin’s critically acclaimed 1999 album Black on Both Sides. Yasiin was ahead of his time with this record. Many rappers are currently making melodic records and deciding to sing , but Yasiin did this in 1999 when it wasn’t the norm. This was a time when hardcore rap and lyrics reigned supreme, but Yasiin a talented lyricist himself decided to stray away and delve into soulful and melodic sounds. This track is introspective and lets you into his psyche and his fears. Lyrics such as “Tomorrow may never come for you or me, life is not promised” lets you see possible signs of depression in his psyche. He also discusses the state of the world and why sometimes he just doesn’t want to be bothered with it. One could argue that this record foreshadows his permanent residency in South Africa. I’ll let you tell it.
